Are you depressed?

During the ups and downs of life, most of us will have some downs and get the blues. We will experience some of the following symptoms of depression (DSM-5, 2013):

Sadness Memory Problems Irritability
Concentration Problems Emptiness Fatigue
No Feelings Sleep Problems Pessimism
Overeating Hopelessness Lack of Appetite
Low Self-esteem Body Aches & Pains Lack of Interest
Restlessness Low Motivation Agitation
Social Withdrawal Everything an Effort Guilt
Moving Slower Indecisiveness
Suicidal Thoughts Suicide Plans

(You may wish to download this list, circle the symptoms that apply to you, and bring it to an appointment for discussion.)

Usually only a few of these symptoms occur during a blue period. They are mild and soon pass. Then there is bounce back. The mood is temporary. Good humor and a more positive outlook return.

But a bounce back does not always happen, especially when the symptoms are intense and many. Instead resilience can fail and then a
clinical depression may develop that needs therapy .
