During the ups and downs of life, most of us will have some downs and get the blues. We will experience some of the following symptoms of depression (DSM-5, 2013):
Sadness | Memory Problems | Irritability |
Concentration Problems | Emptiness | Fatigue |
No Feelings | Sleep Problems | Pessimism |
Overeating | Hopelessness | Lack of Appetite |
Low Self-esteem | Body Aches & Pains | Lack of Interest |
Restlessness | Low Motivation | Agitation |
Social Withdrawal | Everything an Effort | Guilt |
Moving Slower | Indecisiveness | |
Suicidal Thoughts | Suicide Plans |
(You may wish to download this list, circle the symptoms that apply to you, and bring it to an appointment for discussion.)
Usually only a few of these symptoms occur during a blue period. They are mild and soon pass. Then there is bounce back. The mood is temporary. Good humor and a more positive outlook return.
But a bounce back does not always happen, especially when the symptoms are intense and many. Instead resilience can fail and then a
clinical depression
may develop that needs
therapy
.
