The divorce rate is high for marriages and for remarriages as well. But almost no one who gets married, whether it be for the first time or for the third, expects to have the marriage end in divorce: "Until death do us part." Newlyweds believe,"It won't happen to us." Yet all too often it does happen.
There are many roads to divorce. They generally result in repeated relationship ruptures that build up to a point that is beyond repair. The spousal partnership dissolves. The original commitment that was sincerely made has to be broken. The ties that bind are hard to undo because the many strands of two lives have become tightly interwoven. Divorcing can be logistically complicated and emotionally painful. Even those who feel mostly relief that they can finally let go are also grieving the loss.
