Social Anxiety in Indianapolis, IN
Many of us have some degree of social anxiety, at least in particular situations. Some of us have so much anxiety that it can lead to intense discomfort or even avoidance. Time magazine (2025) provided some tips gleaned from several experts to help handle the anxiety in conversations with others. I think of these five tips as social grease:
1) Practicing in casual situations where contacts are brief and the stakes are low can increase self confidence. Such contacts might be with waiters, baristas, taxi drivers, and neighbors.
2) For longer contacts, have at hand some conversational prompts. One might be," How do you know our host?" Another could be a non-controversial item from the news, "Have you heard that ...?" You might ask if they have tried a really good restaurant lately or seen a good movie lately, if it seems appropriate.
3) Show interest. To keep the conversation going, you might say,"Tell be more about that." Sometimes just showing that you are attentive keeps the other talking.
4) Staying grounded can be calming. For example, having a piece of jewelry that you can touch can soothe as can pressing your feet to the floor or regulating your breathing.
5) Have a graceful way out. You might tell your host that you have a prior obligation that will require your leaving early. When wanting to leave a conversation you might say something like, "It has been good taking to you--I need to check in with Jane."
These tips can help. If you want a more personal examination of this issue, please feel free to Contact Me.
