Parent-Adult Child Estrangement

Parent-Adult Child Estrangement in Indianapolis, IN

The Monitor on Psychology (2024) included an article on the estrangement between parents and their adult children. This subject has not often been dealt with because it contradicts societal ideals about family. The rifts can be initiated by either the adult children or by their parents.  Many have kept silent about it for fear of disapproval.

A large study found that 6% of  adult children reported estrangement from their mothers, and 26% were estranged from their fathers. The adult children were usually in their 20s when  it occurred. Another study found that a higher rate occurred in middle age, perhaps because middle-aged people may have both adult children and parents, which makes a bigger pool to draw from.

The estrangement may be triggered by a "last straw" event, but even then there usually has been a long history of relationship distress. Research gives evidence that the most common reasons given are abuse (emotional, physical, sexual), neglect, substance abuse, mental health, and major ideological differences.

The estrangement may not be forever. In a study of adult estranged children, 81% reported reconciliation with their mothers; 69%, with their fathers. When reconciliation is possible, it can benefit both parties and perhaps the larger family. Nevertheless, it is not always possible or even advisable to try. For some it means a better quality of life to exclude a family member permanently.
