Purpose in Indianapolis, IN
Studies have shown that a sense of purpose makes significant contributions toward maintaining cognition and happiness, especially as people age. Feeling that life is rewarding and has meaning to oneself and others helps brain function. Memories are more available, coherent, and vivid, even when there are depressive symptoms. When there is a strong sense of purpose, there is a lower risk of dementia. More happiness and less depression comes along with a sense of purpose. Winning the lottery lifts spirits temporarily but fades with time. Purpose lifts the spirits over time. Those that have it "know that a new day means new opportunities to feel fulfilled" (p. 7).
COVID-19 gave people time to pause and the time to consider their purpose, especially those who had defined themselves by their jobs. Some lost their jobs, left their jobs, or changed careers. The purpose of life was no longer work. They had to search elsewhere. Alternative purposes came often from helping others, contributing to the community, or creativity. Many found it rewarding to nurture close, enduring relationships. But again, a sense of purpose is very personal. It can be worth serious consideration.
